BUS TOUR - ‘DOORNFONTEIN MARATHON’

SATURDAY, 27th FEBRUARY

Doornfontein, the suburb of the elite before World War I, still retains some of its former grandeur.  This was succeeded by a large Jewish community, then a black community who lived in five ‘notorious slumyards’.  A period of industrialisation followed that saw an influx of a coloured and, to a lesser extent, Indian and Chinese communities.  Each left its own mark:  their monuments we shall admire if they are extant; their sites we shall visit and learn about if no lasting memorials remain.  Altogether there are 250 sites of historical interest, which we shall try to cover in four hours.  There will only be one disembarkation for a short rest stop.  The Aga Khan visited Doornfontein, so did two Popes, Sam Jameson lived here, as did Walter Sisulu, Joe Slovo, Anton van Wouw and even David Beresford Pratt worked here.  The suburb boasts three National Monuments, Ellis Park and Ellis Park Stadium.

Recently discovered are

- the site of Sir Jan Langerman’s mansion on nine New Doornfontein stands; he was Sir Robinson’s right-hand man

- the mansion of Mr Mostert, who left Doornfontein in 1912 for Balfour where he had built his Herbert Baker 55-roomed house, which he bequeathed ‘to the future Prime Ministers of South Africa’

- the second, 1905, home of the old Queen ‘Vic’ nursing home

- the site of the shack of two bedraggled coloured brothers, one of whom became a Professor of English at the University of California at Berkeley and the other head of Overseas Missions in Canada

One day you will be able to buy the book.  Alkis Doucakis and Ann Meisel are editing a book on Doornfontein to which 84 authors have submitted 131 papers, of which 118 have been edited.
